The American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons is pleased to offer you the Webcast of its May 15-19, 2010 Annual meeting held in Minneapolis, MN.  No CME credit is offered for this Webcast and ASCRS offers it free of charge to be used as another tool for ones lifelong learning.  This activity is webcast from September 15, 2010 to September 15, 2011.

Introduction

This scientific program is designed to provide surgeons with an in-depth and up-to-date knowledge relative to surgery for diseases of the colon, rectum and anus with emphasis on patient care, teaching and research. The purpose of all sessions is to improve the quality of care of patients with diseases of the colon and rectum.


Target Audience
The program is intended for the education of colon and rectal surgeons as well as general surgeons and others involved in the treatment of diseases affecting the colon, rectum and anus.

NEOPLASIA I (S-1 to S-10)

Objectives:  At the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to: (1) know the results from the national register for rectal cancers in Sweden 1995-2001; (2) discuss risks and benefits associated with intraoperative radiation therapy; (3) develop a method to help predict outcome for patients who have preoperative chemoradiotherapy and surgery for rectal cancer; (4) analyze the predictive role of FDG-PET for assessing neoadjuvant chemoradiation response of locally advanced rectal cancer; (5) realize the benefits of Transanal Endoscopic Microsurgery in rectal cancer; (6) discuss and display outcomes of evolving techniques in endoluminal surgery; (7) comprehend the rationale for pathological grading of the plane of surgery in colon cancer and comprehend that surgical education can improve the oncological quality of the specimen produced; (8) realize that in treating rectal cancer patients with low anterior resection of the rectum, a larger proportion of patients than anticipated by the patients as well as by the surgeon, may end up with a permanent stoma; (9) describe the complications of abdominoperineal resection in patients who fail chemoradiation for squamous cell carcinoma of the anus and describe the treatment success of abdominoperineal resection for patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the anus that has failed chemoradiation; and (10) learn the management principles of pseudomyxoma peritonei from perforated appendiceal tumors and analyze the morbidity, mortality and long-term survival of patients following complete macroscopic tumor removal surgery for perforated appendiceal tumor.

    ObjectivesAt the conclusion of this session, participants should be able to: (61) adopt an enhanced recovery program in patients undergoing laparoscopic resection for colon cancer and develop an adequate enhanced recovery program in their circumstances; (62) identify the risk factors for prolonged length of stay after colorectal surgery; (63) assess whether inequalities in demographics and socioeconomic status affect patient length of stay following colon and rectal surgery; (64) learn current trends of colorectal cancer incidence in different age groups, compare trends of colorectal cancer to cervical cancer and learn the distribution of colorectal cancers in patients between the ages of 35 and 49; (65) recognize the increased mortality and morbidity in dialysis patients undergoing colorectal surgery and recognize that urgent/emergent colorectal procedures in dialysis patients are associated with a 25% mortality; (66) recognize the underuse of chemotherapy amongst stage 3 colorectal cancer patients and realize the association between adverse events and omission of stage-appropriate chemotherapy; (67) comprehend venous thromboembolism rates in colorectal surgery patients and be aware of the risk of venous thromboembolism after hospital discharge in colorectal surgery patients; (68) realize several options for preoperative antibiotic preparation prior to elective colon resection and assess the role of preoperative oral antibiotic use on surgical site infections; (69) analyze the outcome of patients operated-on for diseases of the left colon in emergency conditions, when a resecction with primary anastomosis was performed without intraoperative colonic irrigation; and (70) realize that lymphatic invasion was an independent predictive factor of recurrence in patients with pSM CRC and that considering the survival benefit and cost performance for relapsed patients, postoperative intensive follow up for patients with pT1 CRC may be unnecessary.
